🌊 Makua Rothman @makuarothman and Darrick Doerner @darrickd O’ahu. A student and his sensei. This was early ski days on the North Shore when the first four strokes were appearing. It was a day like this, a few years earlier, when I watched Makua and Darrick get caught by a monster, and DD grabbed Makua, (around 12 - 13 years old I think), and he bear hugged him through a pounding from a solid 25 foot wave. (Today I guess, it’s a fifty foot wave.) I was surprised, and I later asked DD why he’d done that and he said that basically they were gonna get destroyed whatever they did, and by holding onto Makua he knew that at least they’d be together when they came up. There’s simply no substitute for the years of lifesaving Darrick put in on the North Shore, and his ground-up love and experience riding big waves. You just couldn’t have a better teacher. Makua of course, went on to become a Big Wave World Champion.
🌘 Mahalo @sean_davey - From this morning’s early partial solar eclipse, here in Hawaii. It was way brighter than normal which made it really hard for the camera sensor to properly capture the actual eclipse. Enjoy…🌞🕶️🍳 . . . . . . . . . . #solareclipse #solareclipse2024 #eclipse #eclipsesolar #partialeclipse #moon #sun
